Online Slots Guide: How Slots Work, RTP, Volatility and Choosing the Right Game

How online slots really work: random number generators, RTP, volatility, paylines vs ways, bonus features and the practical rules for choosing slots that fit your bankroll.

Slots account for around 70% of all online casino revenue. They are easy to play, endlessly varied and, at the wrong stakes or with the wrong expectations, expensive. This guide explains how they actually work so you can choose games deliberately rather than by thumbnail.

How a slot decides each spin

Every online slot runs on a random number generator (RNG) that produces thousands of numbers per second. The instant you press spin, the game takes the current number and maps it to a reel position. The animation you watch afterwards is theatre; the result was determined the moment you clicked.

Consequences of this:

  • No spin is influenced by previous spins. A slot is never "due".
  • Stopping the reels early does not change the result.
  • Time of day, casino traffic and your bet history are irrelevant.
  • The RNG is certified by independent labs (eCOGRA, iTech Labs, GLI) at licensed casinos and the results are audited against the published RTP.

RTP: the cost of playing

Return to player is the percentage of total stakes a slot returns over millions of spins. At 96%, the slot keeps 4% as house edge. That figure is your long-run cost per euro wagered. Our RTP and volatility guide covers this in depth, but three practical points:

  1. Check the RTP in the game's info panel. Many slots ship in several RTP versions and the casino chooses which to run. The same game can be 96.5% at one casino and 94% at another.
  2. Prefer 96% or higher. Below 95% you are paying a premium for the same entertainment.
  3. RTP says nothing about your session. It is a long-run average with enormous short-term variance.

Volatility: how the money moves

Two slots at 96% RTP can behave completely differently. Low-volatility slots (Starburst, Blood Suckers) pay small amounts often; high-volatility slots (Book of Dead, Dead or Alive 2, most Nolimit City titles) pay rarely and big. Match the volatility to your bankroll:

Bankroll per sessionBet sizeVolatility
€20€0.10-0.20Low to medium
€50€0.20-0.50Medium
€100+€0.50-1.00Any, including high

Rule of thumb: keep at least 200 bets in your session bankroll for medium volatility and 400 for high.

Paylines, ways and cluster pays

  • Paylines: classic format. Wins form along fixed lines (10, 20, 25, 243). Bet per line x lines = total bet.
  • Ways to win: any matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right pay. 243-ways is common; Megaways slots vary reel heights every spin for up to 117,649 ways.
  • Cluster pays: symbols pay when they form groups of five or more anywhere on the grid, as in Reactoonz or Jammin' Jars.

None of these formats is inherently better; they change the feel of the game, not the RTP.

Bonus features

Free spins are the most common feature, usually triggered by three scatter symbols. They carry the bulk of a high-volatility slot's RTP, which is why long dry spells between features hurt so much.

Multipliers increase wins by a factor, often growing during free spins.

Expanding symbols (Book of Dead, Book of Ra) pick a symbol that fills whole reels during free spins.

Cascading reels remove winning symbols and drop new ones, allowing chain reactions.

Bonus buy lets you pay a fixed multiple of your stake (typically 60-100x) to enter the feature directly. Bonus buys often have a slightly different RTP from the base game, shown in the info panel. They are banned in the UK and excluded from most bonus wagering.

Progressive jackpots (Mega Moolah, Mega Fortune) pool a fraction of every bet into a prize that grows until won. The base game RTP is usually lower to fund the jackpot; only play them if you specifically want a shot at a life-changing sum.

Choosing a slot in practice

  1. Decide your session bankroll and bet size using the table above.
  2. Filter the lobby by volatility if the casino supports it (Casumo, N1 Casino and BitStarz do).
  3. Open the info panel; confirm RTP is 96% or higher and note the hit frequency and max win.
  4. Try the demo version first. It uses the same RNG and RTP.
  5. Set a loss limit and a win goal before your first real spin.

Slot myths that cost money

  • "Hot" and "cold" slots: nonsense. The RNG has no memory.
  • Casinos tighten slots at busy times: impossible without changing the certified game configuration, which regulators audit.
  • Betting max unlocks better odds: only for some progressive jackpots. RTP is otherwise constant.
  • A near miss means a win is close: near misses are a deliberate design element to increase excitement. They predict nothing.
  • Autoplay affects results: it does not; it just makes you spend faster.

Where to play

Slot-heavy casinos with the biggest libraries and best filtering are ranked on our reviews of BitStarz, N1 Casino and Casumo. For slots with bonus money, remember that slots usually contribute 100% towards wagering, which is the main reason casinos make them the focus of welcome offers.

Frequently asked questions

Are online slots rigged?

At licensed casinos, no. Slots use certified random number generators tested by independent labs, and the published RTP must match the game's actual configuration. The house edge is real but it is disclosed, not hidden.

What is the best time to play slots?

There is no best time. Every spin is an independent random event; the time of day, how long since the last jackpot and whether other players are winning have no effect on your odds.

Do slots pay more if I bet more?

Bet size does not change RTP. Some slots require maximum bet to qualify for a progressive jackpot, and some pay proportionally larger bonuses at higher stakes, but the percentage return is the same.

What slot has the highest RTP?

Among widely available slots, Ugga Bugga (99.07%), Mega Joker (99%), Blood Suckers (98%) and 1429 Uncharted Seas (98.6%) are the highest. Most mainstream slots sit between 95.5% and 96.5%.
