RTP and Volatility Explained: What the Numbers Really Mean for Your Bankroll

Two numbers describe how any slot or casino game will treat your money: return to player (RTP) tells you the long-run cost, and volatility tells you how bumpy the ride will be getting there. Most players fixate on the first and ignore the second, which is exactly backwards for anyone playing a normal-sized session.

What RTP actually means

RTP is the percentage of all money wagered that a game returns to players over the very long run. A slot with 96% RTP keeps 4% of turnover as house edge. Wager €10,000 across millions of spins and you would expect to get €9,600 back.

The crucial phrase is "very long run". RTP is calculated over millions or billions of simulated spins. Your session of 500 spins is a rounding error in that sample. You could finish a 96% RTP session up 300% or down 100%, and both are entirely consistent with the published figure.

What RTP does tell you is your expected cost per unit of play. At 96% RTP, each €1 bet costs you 4 cents on average. At 92%, it costs 8 cents, double the price for the same entertainment. Over a long time horizon, that difference is real money.

Same slot, different RTP

Many studios ship slots with multiple RTP configurations. Play'n GO's Book of Dead exists at 96.21%, 94.25% and lower settings; Pragmatic Play offers most titles at 96.5%, 95.5% and 94.5%. The casino chooses which version to run.

Volatility: the number that shapes your session

Volatility (or variance) describes how a game distributes its returns. Two slots with identical 96% RTP can feel completely different:

• A low volatility slot pays small amounts frequently. Hit rates of 30-40% per spin are common, maximum wins are typically 500-1,000x stake, and your balance drifts slowly.
• A high volatility slot pays rarely but big. Hit rates may be 15-20%, maximum wins reach 5,000-50,000x stake, and your balance can fall steeply for hundreds of spins before a single feature recovers everything.

Why volatility matters more than RTP for your bankroll

Consider a €100 bankroll at €1 a spin. On a low-volatility slot you will almost certainly get several hundred spins; on a high-volatility slot there is a meaningful chance you bust in 60 spins without hitting a feature. The RTP could be identical. Your experience will not be.

The practical rule: your bankroll should be at least 100x your stake on low-volatility games, 200x on medium and 300-500x on high-volatility games if you want a reasonable chance of surviving the dry spells long enough to hit the features that carry the RTP.

Hit frequency and max win: the other two numbers

Modern slot info panels often show two more figures:

• Hit frequency: the percentage of spins that return any win. 25% means one spin in four pays something, though most "wins" are smaller than the stake.
• Max win: the largest possible payout as a multiple of stake. Slots with 10,000x+ max wins are almost always high volatility, because that potential must be paid for with long losing stretches.

RTP in table games and live casino

Table games have fixed, well-known RTPs determined by the rules:

• Blackjack (basic strategy, good rules): around 99.5%
• Baccarat (banker bet): 98.94%
• European roulette: 97.3%
• American roulette: 94.74%
• Casino game shows (Crazy Time, Monopoly Live): roughly 95-96% depending on the bet

These are consistently higher than most slots, which is why table games are usually weighted at 10% or less towards bonus wagering. The casino knows where its edge is thin.

How to use this information

1. Check the RTP in the game info panel before playing; avoid anything under 95% when a higher version exists elsewhere.
2. Match volatility to your bankroll and goal using the table above.
3. Accept that short-term results have almost nothing to do with RTP; a bad session is not evidence of a rigged game, and a good one is not evidence of skill.
