Casino Bankroll Management: How to Play Longer and Lose Less

Simple, realistic bankroll rules for online casino play: setting a budget, sizing bets, using deposit limits, handling wins and losses, and knowing when to stop.

By Best Licensed Casinos Editorial Team · Published · Updated · 7 min read

Bankroll management will not help you beat the casino. Nothing does; the house edge is permanent. What it will do is make your money last longer, keep gambling in the entertainment column of your budget, and protect you from the decisions people make when they are tilted. Here is a practical system that works.

Step 1: Separate gambling money from real money

Your gambling bankroll is money you have already decided to spend on entertainment, exactly like a concert ticket. It is not savings, not rent and not money you hope to grow. If losing the entire amount would affect your life in any way, it is too much.

Decide on a monthly figure and set it as a deposit limit at every casino you use. Licensed casinos enforce these limits and make increases slow (usually 24 hours or more), which is the point: the limit protects you from the version of yourself who wants to raise it at 2am.

Step 2: Divide the monthly bankroll into sessions

If your monthly budget is €200 and you play twice a week, each session has €25. Playing your entire monthly bankroll in one sitting is not wrong, but it means one bad session ends your month. Splitting it smooths the experience and gives you several chances to hit a good run.

Step 3: Size your bets to your session bankroll

The most common mistake is betting too much per spin relative to the session bankroll. A €25 session at €2 a spin is 12 spins, not a session.

Use these ratios as a starting point:

Game typeBet as % of session bankrollSpins/hands per €25
Low-volatility slots1%100
Medium-volatility slots0.5%200
High-volatility slots0.25%400
Blackjack / baccarat2-5%20-50 hands
Roulette (even money)2-5%20-50 spins

These figures give you enough spins to actually experience the game's features, which is where the entertainment and most of the RTP live. Our RTP and volatility guide explains why the volatility of the game matters so much here.

Step 4: Set a loss limit and a win goal

Before the first spin, write down two numbers:

  • Loss limit: the session bankroll. When it is gone, the session is over. No top-ups.
  • Win goal: a realistic target, typically 50-100% of the session bankroll. When you hit it, withdraw at least the original stake and either stop or continue only with profit.

The win goal matters as much as the loss limit. Winnings left in a casino account almost always get wagered back. Withdrawing when you are up is how you actually book a win.

Step 5: Use the casino's tools

Every licensed casino offers, from your account settings:

  • Deposit limits (daily, weekly, monthly)
  • Loss limits
  • Wager limits
  • Session time reminders ("reality checks")
  • Time-outs (24 hours to 6 weeks)
  • Self-exclusion (6 months to permanent)

Use the first two proactively. Use the reminder to break autopilot every 30-60 minutes. Keep the last two in mind as a safety net; there is no shame in using them, and casinos are legally required to honour them.

Step 6: Handle bonuses deliberately

Bonuses extend your bankroll but come with conditions. Two rules:

  1. Never deposit more than you planned just to unlock a bigger bonus. The bonus is not worth more than your budget.
  2. Only take bonuses whose wagering you can realistically complete within the expiry period at your normal stake. Otherwise the bonus will pressure you into playing more than you intended. Our wagering requirements guide shows how to evaluate them.

Step 7: Never chase

Chasing is increasing your stake after losses to "get back to even". It is the mechanism by which entertainment spending becomes a problem. The house edge is identical on your hundredth spin as on your first; being down does not make you due a win. If you notice the urge to chase, that is your cue to stop for the day.

Step 8: Review monthly

At the end of each month, check how much you actually deposited and withdrew. Most casinos show this in your account history. If the net figure is more than you decided in Step 1, reduce next month's limit. If gambling has stopped being enjoyable, or you are hiding it, or you are thinking about it when you should be doing other things, please read our responsible gambling page and consider talking to one of the free helplines listed there.

The mindset that makes this work

You are buying entertainment at a known price, the house edge. A good session is one where you enjoyed the time and stayed within your limits, regardless of the result. A bad session is one where you broke your rules, even if you won. Judge yourself on the rules, not the outcome, and the outcome will take care of itself over time.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I bet per spin?

A common rule is 0.5% to 1% of your session bankroll per spin on medium-volatility slots, and less on high-volatility games. With €100, that means €0.50 to €1 per spin.

Should I stop when I am winning?

Set a win goal before you start (for example, 50% of your bankroll) and withdraw at least part of it when you hit it. Wins that are not withdrawn tend to be wagered back.

Is it a good idea to chase losses?

No. Chasing losses by increasing stakes is the most common route to problem gambling. The house edge does not change because you are behind. Set a loss limit and stop when you reach it.

Do casino deposit limits actually work?

Yes. Deposit limits at licensed casinos are enforced by the operator and cannot be increased instantly; increases typically take 24 hours or more to apply, while decreases are immediate.
