Online Roulette Guide: Rules, Bets, Odds and Which Wheel to Play

Roulette is the simplest table game to learn and one of the hardest to play "well", because there is nothing to decide beyond which wheel you sit at and how much you bet. Those two choices, though, make a large difference. Here is everything you need.

The three wheels

European roulette has 37 pockets: 1-36 plus a single zero. House edge on every bet: 2.7%.

American roulette has 38 pockets: 1-36 plus 0 and 00. The payouts are identical to European, but the extra pocket raises the house edge to 5.26%. There is no reason to play it online where European tables are universal.

French roulette is European roulette with two player-friendly rules on even-money bets: La Partage returns half your stake when zero hits, and En Prison lets the bet ride to the next spin. Either rule cuts the house edge on even-money bets to 1.35%, the best odds in roulette.

Every bet, its payout and its odds

Payouts are the same across wheels; the odds below are for European roulette.

The key insight: on a European wheel, every bet has the same edge. Choosing straight-up numbers over red/black changes your variance (bigger swings), not your expected loss. Choose based on how you want the session to feel.

Call bets and racetrack bets

Live and many RNG tables offer a "racetrack" for bets on wheel sections:

• Voisins du Zéro (17 numbers around zero)
• Tiers du Cylindre (12 numbers opposite zero)
• Orphelins (8 remaining numbers)
• Neighbours (a number plus the two on each side)

These are just combinations of standard bets with the same 2.7% edge. They are convenient, not advantageous.

Betting systems, and why they fail

Roulette attracts more "systems" than any other game. All of them fail for the same reason: each spin is independent and every bet carries the same negative expectation. A system cannot change that; it can only change the pattern of wins and losses.

Martingale (double after each loss) wins small amounts often and loses a catastrophic amount rarely, when a losing streak hits the table maximum or empties your bankroll. Eight consecutive losses at €5 require a €1,280 bet to recover €5 of profit.

Fibonacci, D'Alembert and Labouchère are gentler versions of the same idea with the same flaw.

Flat betting (same stake every spin) is the only approach that keeps variance predictable. It will not beat the edge either, but it will not bankrupt you in one bad run.

Live roulette variants

Live casino has produced several roulette formats worth understanding:

Lightning Roulette (Evolution) pays straight-up wins only 29:1 instead of 35:1 but adds random multipliers of 50x-500x to up to five numbers each spin. The overall house edge remains 2.7% but the variance on straight-up bets is much higher. Other bets are unaffected.

Immersive Roulette uses multiple camera angles and slow-motion replays; same odds as standard European.

Auto Roulette uses an automated wheel with no dealer for faster rounds; standard odds.

Double Ball Roulette fires two balls per spin with adjusted payouts; edge roughly 2.7% on most bets.

Quantum Roulette (Playtech) is Playtech's answer to Lightning Roulette with similar mechanics.

Game shows built on roulette mechanics (such as Crazy Time's wheel) have higher house edges of 4-5% and belong in the entertainment category.

Practical advice

1. Play European or French, never American.
2. If you like even-money bets, seek out La Partage tables; the 1.35% edge is roulette's best deal.
3. Bet flat at 2-5% of your session bankroll.
4. Ignore hot and cold numbers; the wheel has no memory.
