Online Baccarat Guide: Rules, Odds and Why the Banker Bet Wins

Baccarat explained for beginners: how hands are dealt and scored, why the banker bet has the lowest house edge, the side bets to avoid and how live baccarat variants differ.

Baccarat is the game of James Bond and Macau's high-roller rooms, and it is also one of the simplest and lowest-edge games in any casino. There is only one real decision, and this guide will tell you what it is.

How baccarat works

Two hands are dealt: Player and Banker. You bet on which will have a total closer to nine, or on a tie. You are not the "player"; the names are just labels for the two hands.

Cards 2-9 count at face value, tens and face cards count zero, aces count one. Totals above nine drop the tens digit: 7 + 8 = 15 becomes 5.

Each hand receives two cards. A third card may be drawn according to fixed rules (the "tableau") that you do not need to know because the dealer or software applies them automatically:

  • If either hand totals 8 or 9 on two cards ("natural"), no more cards are drawn.
  • The player hand draws a third card on totals of 0-5 and stands on 6-7.
  • The banker hand's decision depends on its total and the player's third card, following a fixed table.

The hand closer to nine wins. Ties push on player and banker bets.

The three main bets

BetPayoutProbabilityHouse edge
Banker1:1 minus 5% commission45.86%1.06%
Player1:144.62%1.24%
Tie8:19.52%14.36%

The banker bet is the best bet in baccarat and one of the best in the casino. The 5% commission exists precisely because the drawing rules favour banker; without it, players would have the edge. Even after commission, banker beats player by 0.18%.

The tie bet is terrible. Some tables pay 9:1, which cuts the edge to 4.85%, still far worse than either main bet.

The only strategy you need

Bet banker. Every hand. Bet flat at a size that gives you at least 30-50 hands of bankroll. That is the entire strategy, and it yields a 1.06% house edge that no decision or pattern-tracking can improve.

Baccarat tables display "roadmaps" (bead plate, big road, big eye boy) showing the history of results. These are entertaining and entirely useless for prediction. Each hand is independent; streaks are normal in random sequences and do not predict the next result.

Side bets to avoid

Live and RNG tables offer numerous side bets:

  • Player Pair / Banker Pair (first two cards a pair, pays 11:1): house edge ~10.4%
  • Perfect Pair (suited pair, pays 25:1): edge ~13%
  • Either Pair (pays 5:1): edge ~13.7%
  • Big / Small (total cards dealt): edge 4.4-5.3%
  • Dragon Bonus (win margin): edge 2.7-9.4% depending on side

None of them come close to the 1.06% banker bet. They exist to lift the table's overall profitability. Skip them.

Baccarat variants

Punto Banco is the standard version described above and the one you will find online.

No Commission baccarat removes the 5% banker commission but pays only 1:2 on a banker win with a total of six. Edge rises to 1.46%.

Speed Baccarat is standard baccarat with 27-second rounds instead of 48. Same odds, faster bankroll turnover.

Squeeze Baccarat lets the dealer (or, in Control Squeeze, you) slowly reveal the cards for drama. Same odds.

Lightning Baccarat (Evolution) adds random multipliers to cards, funded by a 20% fee on every bet. Fun, but the fee raises the house edge substantially.

Mini Baccarat is a lower-limit table with the dealer handling all cards. Same rules.

Live vs RNG baccarat

Live baccarat, streamed with a real dealer, is the natural home of the game. Hands take 30-50 seconds, which limits the number of decisions per hour and therefore your exposure. Table minimums start around €1-€5 at most casinos, with VIP tables reaching €25,000+. RNG baccarat is faster and available at lower stakes but lacks the ritual. Odds are identical.

Bankroll considerations

Because baccarat's edge is so low, variance dominates short sessions. Betting 2-5% of your session bankroll on banker gives you 20-50 hands and a realistic chance of finishing ahead on any given session, while the 1.06% edge slowly asserts itself over many sessions. Flat betting is essential; progressive systems are as dangerous here as in roulette. Read our bankroll guide for the full framework.

Baccarat and bonuses

Baccarat typically contributes 0-10% to bonus wagering and betting both player and banker is a prohibited low-risk strategy. Play with real money. The strongest live baccarat lobbies, including high-limit and Speed tables, are at bet365, Stake and LeoVegas.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the banker bet have a 5% commission?

Because the drawing rules give the banker hand a slightly higher chance of winning (45.86% vs 44.62%). Without commission, banker would be a player-favourable bet. Even with the 5% commission, banker retains the lowest house edge at 1.06%.

Should I ever bet on the tie?

No. The tie pays 8:1 (sometimes 9:1) but occurs only 9.5% of the time, giving a house edge of 14.4% at 8:1 or 4.8% at 9:1. It is the worst bet on the table.

Is baccarat a game of skill?

No. All drawing decisions are fixed by rule; the player makes only one choice, which side to bet on. It is pure chance with a low house edge, which is exactly why it suits high rollers.

What is No Commission baccarat?

A variant that removes the 5% banker commission but pays a banker win on a total of 6 at 1:2 instead of 1:1. This raises the banker house edge to 1.46%, so standard commission baccarat is slightly better.
