Why Casinos Close Accounts and Void Winnings: Bonus Abuse, Duplicate Accounts and Other Traps
The real reasons online casinos confiscate winnings and close accounts: bonus abuse, max bet breaches, duplicate accounts, VPN use and irregular play, with practical steps to protect yourself.

Few things are more frustrating than a confiscated win. Sometimes the casino is at fault; more often the player has broken a rule they never read. This guide explains the common causes, which are legitimate, which are disputable and how to make sure it never happens to you.
Bonus abuse: what it actually means
Casinos offer bonuses to attract players who will stick around. "Bonus abuse" is using those offers in ways that extract value without any intention of being a normal customer. Common examples the terms prohibit:
- Multiple accounts: registering more than once (or one per family member on the same device or IP) to claim the welcome bonus repeatedly. This is the number one cause of permanent closures and is almost always enforced.
- Low-risk wagering strategies: covering opposing outcomes in roulette (red and black) or baccarat (player and banker) to grind through wagering with minimal variance. Terms usually prohibit this explicitly.
- Delayed bonus cash-outs: building a large balance with big bets on bonus funds, then dropping to minimum stakes to clear wagering with little risk. Many terms ban "bet size manipulation" of this kind.
- Collusion: multiple players coordinating, especially in poker or via referral bonuses.
If you are a normal player who simply plays slots with a bonus, none of this applies to you. Bonus abuse enforcement is aimed at systematic exploitation.
The max bet rule: the most common trap for honest players
Nearly every bonus limits your stake while bonus funds are active, typically to €5 per spin or hand (sometimes 10% of the bonus amount if lower). Breach it once, even accidentally by tapping "max bet", and the casino can void every euro of bonus winnings.
The rule exists for a legitimate reason (preventing high-variance strategies with bonus money) but its enforcement can feel brutal. Protect yourself: know the limit, set your stake before activating the bonus, and never use auto-play with variable bet features.
Game restrictions and contribution rules
Bonus terms often exclude certain games entirely (high-RTP slots, some table games, "buy feature" bonus rounds) or weight them at 0%. Playing excluded games with bonus funds can void winnings, even if you did not realise the game was excluded. The list is in the bonus terms; read it before playing anything other than mainstream slots.
Duplicate accounts and household rules
"One account per person, household, IP address and device" is standard wording. It catches:
- Two partners who each open an account from the same home
- A player who forgot an old account and registers again
- Shared devices in student housing
Reputable casinos will usually merge or close a second account and return deposits if there is no evidence of bonus abuse. Less reputable ones treat any duplicate as fraud. If someone in your household already plays at a casino, contact support before registering and ask them to note it on the account.
VPNs and restricted countries
Casinos block certain countries because they lack a licence there. Playing through a VPN to bypass the block is a terms breach, and you will be caught at withdrawal when KYC documents reveal your real address. Funds are confiscated and there is no recourse; the casino is often legally obliged not to pay a player in a restricted jurisdiction. Play only at casinos that accept your country. Every Best Licensed Casinos review lists restrictions.
KYC failures and mismatched details
Accounts are closed when identity documents do not match registration details: a different name spelling, a wrong date of birth, or an address that does not match the proof supplied. Usually this is resolvable with correct documents, but it delays withdrawals and can escalate to closure if the casino suspects impersonation. Register with your exact legal details and keep your documents current.
Chargebacks
Disputing a casino deposit with your bank is treated as fraud by every operator. Your account will be closed, remaining funds confiscated and your details often shared with other casinos in the group. If you have a genuine payment problem, resolve it with the casino first.
"Irregular play": legitimate rule or excuse?
Reputable casinos define irregular play specifically in their terms. If a casino cites "irregular play" without pointing to a defined clause and specific bets, push back. Ask for:
- The exact term breached
- The specific bets or actions that breached it
- The date the pattern was identified
An MGA- or UKGC-licensed casino must provide this and, if you disagree, submit to ADR. A casino that cannot articulate the breach is on weak ground. Our guide to spotting rogue casinos covers what to do when the casino itself is the problem.
How to never have a win voided
- Read the bonus terms every time. Terms differ between offers at the same casino.
- Write down the max bet and stay under it. Avoid auto-play with bonus funds.
- Play only games that contribute to wagering.
- Have one account. Tell support if a family member plays too.
- Never use a VPN.
- Register with exact legal details and verify early.
- Never dispute a deposit with your bank.
- Prefer non-sticky bonuses, or no-wagering casinos like PlayOJO, where most of these rules simply do not exist.
Almost every voided win we have investigated traces back to one of the items above. Following this list is not restrictive; it is just playing the game the way the casino has agreed to pay for.

Frequently asked questions
What is bonus abuse?
Bonus abuse is exploiting promotional offers against their intended purpose: opening multiple accounts to claim bonuses repeatedly, using betting patterns designed to extract bonus value with minimal risk, or colluding with others. Casinos treat it as a breach of terms and void associated winnings.
Can a casino keep my deposit?
At licensed casinos, your deposit should be returned even when bonus winnings are voided, unless fraud or a serious breach such as duplicate accounts is involved. Confiscation of deposits at a licensed casino can be challenged through ADR.
Is using a VPN at an online casino illegal?
It is not usually illegal, but it breaches the terms of virtually every casino if you use it to access the site from a restricted country. Casinos detect this at withdrawal and confiscate funds. It is not worth the risk.
What is 'irregular play'?
A catch-all term in bonus terms covering betting patterns that exploit bonus mechanics, such as placing large bets to build a balance and then small bets to clear wagering, or covering multiple outcomes in table games. Reputable casinos define it specifically; vague use is a red flag.
