Casino Bonus Trends in 2026: Smaller Headlines, Better Terms
Welcome bonuses are shrinking on paper but improving in practice. We compared the offers at all 12 casinos we review against last year and explain what the shift towards low wagering, rakeback and no-wagering spins means for players.

Every September we re-check the welcome offer at every casino we review. This year the pattern was impossible to miss: the numbers in the adverts are getting smaller, and the small print is getting friendlier. Here is what changed, why, and how to take advantage of it.
The headline number is falling at regulated casinos
Two years ago a "100% up to €1,000" welcome package was table stakes for any casino trying to compete. In 2026, among the MGA- and UKGC-licensed brands we cover, the median first-deposit match has dropped to roughly €200. bet365 sits at £100, Betsson at €100, 888casino at €200 and Casumo at €300. Only N1 Casino keeps a four-figure first deposit at €1,000, and it does so with 40x wagering.
The reasons are regulatory rather than commercial. The UK Gambling Commission's consultation on bonus terms, Sweden's bonus cap and the Dutch and German licence regimes have all pushed operators towards smaller, simpler offers. Operators with multiple licences tend to harmonise their terms downwards rather than run a dozen variants.
Wagering multiples are coming down
Smaller bonuses would be bad news on their own. The good news is that wagering requirements dropped alongside them. Across our 12 casinos the average multiple fell from about 38x to 33x year on year. bet365 remains the standout at 20x, Casumo and 888casino sit at 30x, and Betsson, LeoVegas and King Billy at 35x.
The maths matters more than the headline. A €100 bonus at 20x requires €2,000 in turnover; a €500 bonus at 40x requires €20,000. On a 96% RTP slot, the expected cost of that turnover is €80 in the first case and €800 in the second. The "bigger" bonus has negative expected value unless you would have wagered €20,000 anyway.
No-wagering offers went from novelty to category
PlayOJO has offered wager-free spins since 2017, and for years it was an outlier. In 2026 wager-free spins appear in the standard welcome package at a growing number of UK- and MGA-licensed casinos, often as an alternative to a match bonus. The mechanism is simple: you deposit, receive a fixed number of spins, and every penny won is credited as withdrawable cash.
Value is easy to calculate. Fifty spins at €0.10 on a 96% RTP slot are worth around €4.80 in expected return. That is not a lot of money, but it is real money with no conditions, which is more than can be said for many €500 bonuses that expire unclaimed after seven days.
Crypto casinos have abandoned the match bonus almost entirely
Stake and Roobet, the two largest crypto casinos we review, do not offer a deposit match at all. Instead they pay rakeback on every bet, with weekly and monthly reload bonuses that scale with your activity and a VIP ladder on top. None of it carries wagering requirements.
For frequent players the arithmetic favours rakeback. A player wagering €10,000 a month at 1% rakeback earns €100 a month, every month, with no conditions. That comfortably beats a one-off €200 match at 35x. For a player who deposits €50 once, the match bonus wins. Know which player you are before choosing.
Hybrid crypto casinos such as BitStarz still run large multi-deposit packages, in BitStarz's case up to 5 BTC across four deposits. The 40x wagering and seven-day expiry per deposit make these offers suitable only for players with significant bankrolls and time.
Expiry windows are quietly getting shorter
Not every change is positive. Several casinos have trimmed bonus expiry from 30 days to 7 or 10 days, including 22Bet, BitStarz, King Billy and N1 Casino. A short window on a large bonus is designed to be forfeited by casual players. 888casino moves in the other direction with a generous 90-day window, and Betsson, LeoVegas, Casumo and bet365 all hold at 30 days.
Our rule of thumb: divide the required turnover by the days available. If you would need to wager more than €200 a day to clear the bonus in time, it is not designed for you.
Maximum bet rules are being enforced more strictly
Nearly every bonus caps stakes at around €5 per spin while bonus funds are active. What changed in 2026 is enforcement. More casinos now void bonus winnings automatically when the cap is breached, rather than warning the player first. Read the max bet rule before your first spin and set your stake accordingly; exceeding it accidentally on a single bonus round can wipe out a session's winnings.
What this means for you
- Judge bonuses by turnover, not size. Bonus multiplied by wagering, divided by days to clear, tells you almost everything.
- If you play regularly, prefer rakeback and cashback. Continuous value without conditions beats any one-off match.
- If you play occasionally, prefer no-wagering spins or a low-multiple match. PlayOJO and bet365 lead here.
- Treat multi-deposit packages as four separate decisions. You are never obliged to make the second, third or fourth deposit.
- Verify your account before you deposit. Faster withdrawals are the real bonus, and KYC is the most common delay.
We update every casino review with the current bonus terms monthly. If you spot an offer that has changed before we do, tell us and we will correct it within two business days.

Frequently asked questions
Are casino bonuses getting worse?
Headline amounts are getting smaller at regulated casinos, but the terms behind them are improving. Lower wagering multiples, longer expiry windows and more no-wagering offers mean the average bonus is worth more in practice than a year ago, even though it looks less impressive in an advert.
Which casino has the best welcome bonus right now?
For realistic value we rate PlayOJO's no-wagering free spins and bet365's 20x wagering match highest. For raw size, BitStarz and N1 Casino still offer the largest multi-deposit packages, but 40x wagering with short expiry suits only high-volume players.
Is rakeback better than a welcome bonus?
For anyone who plays regularly, usually yes. Rakeback is paid as cash with no wagering requirements and accrues on every bet. A one-off match bonus is better only if you intend to deposit once, clear it, and never play again.
